Draft Resisters at Heart Mountain

Performance & Awards Highlight Heart Mountain Pilgrimage

A longtime member of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation (HMWF) board and a leader in the Cody hospitality industry received awards at the Heart Mountain Pilgrimage over the weekend.

Kathleen Saito Yuille, a board member who was born while incarcerated at Heart Mountain during World War II, received the Douglas W. Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award for her work leading the annual pilgrimages and the 2011 grand opening of the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. Nelson is HMWF’s vice chair whose 1975 book, Heart Mountain: The History of an American Concentration Camp, was the first to tell the camp’s story.

Ted Blair, leader of Blair Hotels, received the LaDonna Zall Compassionate Witness Award for his company’s years of hosting the annual pilgrimages. He recounted how his father, a pharmacist who made the medicines distributed at Heart Mountain, told him of the shameful history of the Japanese American incarceration. Zall was a longtime educator in Park County and the first curator of the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center.

The Pilgrimage also featured a performance of Defining Courage, the multimedia production honoring the sacrifices of the Japanese American soldiers in World War II created by broadcaster and documentarian David Ono.

Japanese Ambassador to the United States Shigeo Yamada was the featured guest of the Pilgrimage. He told the group of 400 visitors that the Japanese people needed to know more about the Japanese American incarceration.
