* The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is open all day. Visit to see the site and exhibits without the crowd. Be sure to go to the registration area at the Holiday Inn and get your name tag first to get in free.

Holiday Inn to Wynona Thompson Auditorium, Cody

Buses will run from the Holiday Inn to the Wynona Thompson Auditorium at 8:30, 8:35, & 8:40. If you prefer to drive on your own, directions are available HERE or at the registration table in the Holiday Inn.

Join us for the opening ceremony, featuring film screenings, panel discussions, and presentations. Presenters include composer/musician Kishi Bashi and ABC Journalist David Ono.

Wynona Thompson Auditorium to Holiday Inn, Cody

A bus will return to the Holiday Inn from the Wynona Thompson Auditorium at 12:00pm.

Cody, WY

Lunch on your own in downtown Cody, Wyoming. Then rejuvenate yourself by walking back to the Holiday Inn or catching buses back from select locations.

Downtown to Holiday Inn, Cody

Buses will leave select downtown locations at 1:45pm to return to the Holiday Inn. Please board the buses no later than 1:40pm to return on time.

Choose which of our educational sessions you would like to attend. All programs run twice at 2:00pm and 3:30pm with a 15 minute break between. Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are not reservable ahead of time so get in early to be sure to get a seat.

  • Authors on Incarceration Panel Discussion
    • Presenters will include Shirley Ann Higuchi and Eric Saul.
  • Japanese American Representation in Popular Culture Panel Discussion
    • Presenters will include Tamlyn Tomita, Kishi Bashi, and Ally Maki.
  • Memories of Heart Mountain
    • Sam Mihara, a former Heart Mountain incarceree, will share his family’s experiences of camp.
  • Restoring the Heart Mountain Root Cellar
    • The root cellar restoration team will present the history of the Heart Mountain root cellars and discuss the ongoing stabilization project of the only remaining cellar.
  • Children’s Guided Activities
    • Children ages 5 to 11 are invited to participate in hands-on activities supervised by HMWF staff and volunteers. Parents may join in or attend other sessions.

Presenters including Shirley Ann Higuchi, Shig Yabu, Willie Ito, and Sam Mihara will be available for autographs in the registration area.

Their DVDs, books, and other merchandise will be available for purchase at the HMWF Store table.

This will will give you a chance to reflect on the Japanese American confinement experience, and express your thoughts in a safe, supportive, small group environment.

Former incarcerees and others who experienced the camp first-hand will be invited to speak first, but all participants — of all ages and ethnicities — will be encouraged to share.

Pilgrimage Schedule for August 01, 2020

Holiday Inn, Cody to Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

Buses will leave the Holiday Inn in Cody at 8:15am, 8:30am, and 8:45am to take Pilgrimage attendees to the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center.

Parking at the Interpretive Center is extremely limited and we encourage everyone to take the free buses. Anyone who drives to the Interpretive Center must pay the $10 parking fee**.

**Handicapped individuals are exempt from this charge and may apply for a handicapped parking pass during registration.

Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

This is the last chance to pick up your name tag and registration materials. Anyone who does not have a name tag will not be able to eat or to participate in the site tours.

Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

Presenters include Secretary Norman Mineta, Senator Alan Simpson, and HMWF Chair Shirley Ann Higuchi. Former Heart Mountain Boy Scouts and veterans will raise the flag during the national anthem.

Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

All site tours/activities will run twice (at 10:00am & 11:15am) and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Choose from among the following options:

  • Tour the original hospital grounds, guided by a former incarceree 
  • Tour the memorial & honor roll, guided by a former incarceree 
  • Tour the original barrack building, guided by a former incarceree 
  • Attend a conversation with Secretary Mineta and Senator Simpson, hosted by Peter Simpson, then see the exhibit that explores their shared history and contributions.
  • Children ages 5 to 11 are invited to participate in hands-on activities supervised by HMWF staff and volunteers. Parents may join in or attend other activities during this time. (Sign children up during registration to reserve space).
  • Unguided exploration of the site and Interpretive Center.

Serve yourself from the catered buffet and then enjoy the time off your feet and out of the sun during the keynote presentation by Eric Saul.

Heart Mountain Interpretive Center to Holiday Inn, Cody

The third round of activities and tours will be as follows:

  • Tour the original hospital grounds
  • Tour the memorial & honor roll
  • Unguided exploration of the site and Interpretive Center

The Interpretive Center closes at 3:00pm. At that time, all visitors may continue to explore the memorial or hospital on their own but will not be able to access the Interpretive Center or main tent.

Buses touring the hospital and memorial area will leave following lunch and will not return to the Interpretive Center but instead will take their passengers directly to the Holiday Inn.

Visit with your fellow attendees and submit your final bids for the silent auction. (Cash bar)

Enjoy time to socialize with your new and renewed friends from the Pilgrimage over a meal in the ballroom of the Holiday Inn.

This event is not included with your base registration fee; to purchase your seat, sign up during the registration process.

Enjoy dessert and coffee or tea while you say goodbye to your fellow travelers for another year.

Also gather and pay for your silent auction items with help from the HMWF staff. The UPS Store, Cody will be on hand to package and prepare any items you might wish to ship home.
