On Saturday, August 1, Pilgrimage attendees will have the choice to participate in the following activities:
Tour the original hospital grounds
Sam Mihara will discuss the history of the hospital complex on top of the hill, including his family’s medical experiences at Heart Mountain. When it opened in 1942, the hospital complex could care for up to 150 patients. The hospital’s boiler house chimney is one of the most iconic structures of the former incarceration site.
Tour the memorial and honor roll
Takashi Hoshizaki & Bacon Sakatani will give a talk at the Honor Roll. This structure lists all Heart Mountain incarcerees who served in the military during WWII (as well as WWI and the Korean War). Participants will then have the opportunity to tour the Setsuko Saito Higuchi Memorial Walking Trail, which features images and facts about the original layout of the confinement site.
Tour the original barrack
Shig Yabu will give a tour and talk about his camp experiences in the barrack setting. Open to the general public for the first time this summer, this barrack building was brought back to the site in 2015 and has been undergoing restoration work since then.
A Chat with Norm and Al
Ever since their chance meeting as boys at Heart Mountain, Norman Mineta and Alan Simpson have been lifelong friends. Join these two legends for a wide-ranging conversation about their lives and their work.
Families with children ages 5-11 who would prefer not to participate in the tours can participate in an array of supervised crafts & games at the Heart Mountain site.
