Heart Mountain Pilgrimage Features New Films, Books, and Panels

New films and presentations about books and digital programming marking the 80th anniversary of the closing of Japanese American incarceration sites will be featured at the Heart Mountain Pilgrimage, which runs from Thursday, July 24, through Saturday, July 26.
The Pilgrimage opens Thursday, July 24, with tours of the interpretive center and other facilities at the site of the incarceration camp that held 14,000 Japanese Americans between August 1942 and November 1945.
On Friday, the Pilgrimage’s morning session will be open to the public to see the premiere of Hello Maggie!, an animated film featuring the story of child incarceree Shigeru Yabu and his pet magpie bird, Maggie. The film will be followed by a panel with animator Willie Ito, director Tony Tarantini and composer Carlo Chiarotti. This will be the only session that is open to those who did not register for the Pilgrimage.
Saturday afternoon will feature Sam Mihara, a Heart Mountain board member and former incarceree, who will give his presentation on the Japanese American incarceration that led to him becoming the 51st Jefferson Lecturer for the National Endowment for the Humanities.
